School can be overwhelming, and even more so when you have work and family commitments. Finding time to destress, balancing study and relaxing can help you from feeling like you are falling into a giant black hole.
Making efforts to balance study, relaxation and regain your peace of mind are not only important, but necessary for quality study time as well. Slow down, take a breadth and chat with a classmate or instructor before the evening begins.
You might find it useful to take a walk, work out, or eat a good meal before sitting down to study. A good balance maximises the effectiveness of your study. However, relaxing too much may be dangerous and keep you from returning to your studies.
Find a good place to study, this may be in a spare room of your home, outside, or at the park. Try not to study in the same locations you work because you may have the tendency to focus on work more than on your studies. Unplug social media during your study time.
Here are a few habits to make the most of your study session while doubling as a relaxation technique.
- Make a study schedule. Write down exactly what you need to focus on that evening and schedule sufficient time to accomplish it.
- Take regular breaks. Everyone works differently, but some people find it helpful to take short breaks every hour. If you are the type of person that finds it challenging to get back to work after breaks, then break when you feel you need to.
- Some would say remove all distraction. However, some of us work better with a few distractions; music, lights, tv, etc. Do what works for you. There is no set rule on the best ways to study, only suggestions based on common practice.
- Make yourself accountable. Sometime it helps to find a study partner or accountability friend that you can tell what you are going to do and the timeframe you tend to do it. Ask them to check in on your at the time to shortly afterward to ensure you do it.
Don’t freak out if you study differently than someone else. Do what works best for you. Once you have completed a task or two and you feel accomplished, relax a bit. It is ok. Just remember to get back to it and reach the goal you set for yourself. You will feel much better after you do and your time of relaxation will be more enjoyable because you feel a sense of accomplishment.
