Coach Client Partnership vs. the Mentor Protege’ Relationship

Welcome to part 2 of “The Coach Client Partnership vs. Mentor Protege’ Relationship” and I’m going to cover the distinctions of the “Coach Client Partnership,” as compared with the Mentor Protege’ Relationship, and why to chose both paths to help people.

Unlike mentoring, which seeks to build a long-term relationship with someone that fosters trust and provides education…

Coaching, more specifically transformational coaching helps people develop the skills necessary to persevere and navigate obstacles built up in the mind affecting their everyday actions.

Transformational coaching doesn’t seek to solve your problem, nor does it recognize that there is a problem.

But teaches you how to look at what you perceive as a problem through a fresh and new perspective.  Recognizing there are no problems…

There’s just a misunderstanding of information in how we respond to what’s happening… and our behavior to what is happening.

For example, people who are most often “Uncommitted to Change”…sees everything as a problem and an obstacle to overcome.

Not as an opportunity to learn, grown and obtain new information that changes their perspective on how they view external stimuli that may be causing internal reactions.

The uncommitted client isn’t an intent listener… and often prepare solutions before completely hearing the challenge.

They talk a good game but often aren’t willing to do what is necessary to transform…

They want to change…but they don’t really, really want to change.

Truth is… they like their comfort zone too much.

Now if you compare that to the person who is someone that is “Committed to Change.”  They hire coaches because they know there is a solution and they alone may not be the best one suited to find it.

They’re someone who is truly committed to getting the most from your coaching…

Someone who listens intently to what you say… and ask… and then goes all in…

Someone who isn’t just paying lip service to the desire to transform…

But, someone who genuinely wants to change and is willing to do what is necessary to see that change manifest.

Here are several distinctions of the “Coach Client Partnership,” which by the way more detail is included in the transformation course.

OK, let’s begin with Coach Client Partnership factor:

  1. A coaching client realizes every area you’re untaught, you’re failing.
  2. There’s time for organized and consistent practice, then there’s time to get out the box.
  3. Listening and asking questions often brings the greatest revelations.
  4. Coaching is seen as a two way interchange of energies and learnings.
  5. The process is a commitment and you don’t give time to someone who doesn’t respect yours.
  6. Holds you to account while you work on a behavior, approach, or attitude you know is suboptimal.
  7. Measure success by behavioral change.

A great coaching relationship is a blessing. Whether you need to work on your strategic thinking or your delegation skills; whether you need to learn to say no or say yes; whether it’s learning to work collegially or communicate better, there’s no substitute for learning from someone who has not only been-there-done-that but is also a gifted educator and mentor.

Until next time, live transformed.
