Coaching & Mentoring Requires Vulnerability

People are afraid to be vulnerable to present who they truly are, so they reveal to you who they think you’d like or want them to be. Sometimes with good reason, because in time past you’ve been wounded and taken advantage of and now your guard is up.

The problem with this narrative is, you do not grow! Because, you have to continually be that frightened and fearful person…

…the one which you have projected to be and not really who you are.

That’s a lot of pressure!

Projecting to be someone else hinders you from changing when you know you need too.

It’s not that you are hiding from what needs to be done.

Actually, it’s quite the opposite.

Resistence IS Futile

When you know you need to make some changes in your life you will feel resistance. (That’s the scared person who’s afraid to be vulnerable.)

Partly because you are comfortable with what you’ve been doing; even if it hasn’t worked well.

It’s safe!

Requires very little effort!

And, no one can enter without your permission.

There’s a false sense of security there…

But, on top of that it’s the idea that what you want to achieve may be too big for your false persona to declare… but it’s not too big for the real you!

What Does It Mean To Be Vulnerable

One of the definitions for vulnerable is “liable to increased penalties but entitled to increased bonuses after winning a game in contract bridge.”

One of the definitions for vulnerable is “liable to increased penalties but entitled to increased bonuses after winning a game in contract bridge.”

The interesting thing about bridge is that when you play you have to calculate you hand correctly to win, knowing there’s resistance on the other side trying to keep you from achieving your goal. However, there are increased bonuses for pressing through and winning the game.

What happens when you know you need change but don’t move forward  toward it?

Frustration, self doubt, increased penalties and more delays…

“When you know, you know” (trust your inner self!)

And if you don’t act then it’s like you are purposely declaring that what you want is not worth your effort and you will never get there.

It’s a difficult place to be., but not one you can’t overcome.

Time to Trust

But the way through it is to commit to making change regardless of the immediate feelings of resistance.

Here’s where you must be vulnerable to get help for the process to work. You must open yourself up to the reality you don’t know all about you yet, nor know what you’re truly capable of.

Because almost immediately you start to see the benefit of change and it becomes empowering…

…even frightening! But not, impossible!

Doing what’s difficult is always required to get what you want…but when you seek out and overcome challenges then the little stuff becomes much easier.

When you can become vulnerable to get the help you require to make the change you need you get empowered.

In Closing

So, if you are ready to execute on your plan, take an open minded approach and be willing to do things differently in order to get what you really want.

If you are always there… in your false reality… you cannot grow.

If you cannot be vulnerable to get help to change, then you are not in a present reality.

You then sell your belief of who you want to be as your reality of what you believe about yourself to be true.

Thus, convincing yourself that your truth is the only truth. You are always right and everyone else doesn’t get it.

One of the keys to faster breakthroughs is vulnerability.
